Harpenden House Update – 1st August 2019

Nottingham Mencap is planning to move from Harpenden House.  It really is beyond repair and we have no security of tenure so are unable to invest in the site.  You may have seen in the ‘News’, we are in negotiation with Nottingham City Council to acquire Edwards Lane Community Centre.  This is within Peggy’s Park and is only a very short distance from our current home.

We will spend significant money to make our new centre much better, with improved access, space and facilities, with opportunities to do more activities. Over the coming months we will be consulting with our students and service users to understand what their priorities are for the new site and will be keeping them all informed of progress.  We will also be commencing a fundraising campaign to help equip and furnish the new centre.

Our new building will also continue to be the local community centre so the building will be more vibrant and part of the local community.  This will give us the opportunity to showcase our work and will present a number of opportunities to integrate with those living around us.

We are currently finalising legal agreements and engaging in a period of community consultation.  Once this has ended we will be in a better position to determine timescales.  We are reassuring those who use our services that a move is still a long time away.  We will be making significant alterations to the Community Centre which will require planning permission followed by a period when the building/renovation work is undertaken.

There will be no interruption of service as we will remain at Harpenden House until the new building is purchased, redesigned and ready for occupation.

When the purchase is confirmed and our plans are drawn up these will be available to see at Harpenden and I am happy to discuss our plans in more detail with any family members/carers who may wish to do so.
