Learning to plan, prepare and cook safely in the kitchen
Students learn the essential skills needed to live as independently as possible. We start by focusing on health and safety within the kitchen and food hygiene. Students learn how to plan menus and prepare a range of simple, healthy meals which they can then make at home.
Our students prepare home-made soups, snacks and healthy main meals and desserts for everyone at lunchtime. They clean and tidy the kitchen and do the washing up. For some more able students this is a good preparation for seeking work in a commercial kitchen environment.
Whilst the students gain skills, knowledge and experience within the kitchen environment the nature of this learning experience helps embed and develop literacy and numeracy skills. To ensure safety and maximum learning outcomes this group is small, thus enabling the students to learn the benefits and skills required to work as a member of a small team.
Cooking for My Independence
You will learn how to prepare simple meals which you can make at home. A small group will work together focusing on health. Planning, preparing and practical skills will be taught to increase confidence and help you work towards independence.
You will either eat what you have cooked for lunch or take it home depending on the menu, which is planned in advance.
Working in a small group learning a range of baking skills, students learn all aspects of safety and hygiene in the kitchen equipping them with the skills and knowledge required to use a kitchen independently and safely
We are focusing on a number of healthier options, learning to make low sugar, fat and gluten free cakes and pastries. Students also learn about ‘portions’ and the need to restrict the amount of unhealthy foods we eat. This links to our ‘healthy lives’ projects and gives our students a real understanding of the amount of fats, sugars and calories in our diets.
