Gardening

We take great pride in the work of our gardening group. Our gardens regularly win an award at the ‘Nottingham in bloom’ competition, receiving certificates from the Mayor. This is a great reward for the effort and the skills of our students who maintain a garden with flowers, shrubs and a lawn.

Our students also grow a variety of fruit and veg, much of which is used in the kitchen for lunches, with raised beds for those with mobility problems. This teaches our students a range of skills and links to our ‘healthy lifestyle’ theme focusing on those foods that are healthy. The experience of planting, tending, picking and eating a variety of fruit and vegetables helps students learn across a broad range of subjects.

We enjoy celebrating the passing of seasons, with trips out, parties and art and craft activities alongside the gardening and we ensure we have planned indoor learning opportunities for when the weather is poor.

Students gain from being active and outdoors and learning about growing and looking after plants, fruit and vegetables. They learn to use garden equipment safely and how to work as members of small teams. We have some very experienced gardeners and some learning about gardening and growing produce for the first time. Whatever your level you will find this group interesting, challenging and rewarding.
