LITERACY & NUMERACY

The Learning Zone is where our students improve their basic skills in Maths and English. We hold small, friendly classes suitable for all abilities with a variety of courses to suit individual needs.

Numeracy and literacy in their most basic forms are so important for all our students. Some wish to improve their written and number skills. Some require support to learn to tell the time or learn to manage money – very practical things that make a huge difference to their lives and their potential for greater independence and feelings of self-worth.

Whatever your level of ability, you will receive personalised support from our qualified tutor, our supportive volunteers and trainees. You will learn at your own pace and your small steps will be celebrated. Participants receive awards at our annual ‘Awards Night’ for the progress they have made throughout that year.

There is ample opportunity to use computers and we sometimes join forces with the IT class to work together. Everyone gets a chance to chat during tea break and join in with a game at the end!

These sessions bring practical rewards enabling greater levels of independence. Behind this we see much improved levels of confidence and improved self-esteem brought about by the process of learning. Learning within a small supportive group, sensitive to the individual needs of its members, helps build a sense of trust and teamwork enabling improved communication skills and mutual reward.
