Transition (from the ages of 18 - 25)

Unlike lots of other services, Nottingham Mencap have designed our services to minimise disruption when someone is transitioning from children’s to adult services.

Be yourself

Gener8 (14 – 24 yrs)

Gener8 runs every Sunday between 11 am and 4 pm.

Gener8 is for young people from 14 to 24 years old with a range of learning disabilities.  Similar to M8s but with more emphasis on transition into adulthood. Our days are filled with fun, with some in- house activity days and days out in the community.  The young people that attend can access arts and crafts, singing, music, dancing, drama, computers, X-Box and Wii, pool and outdoor fun including football, basketball, lacrosse and cricket.  We go on a range of trips including the cinema, Stonebridge City Farm and meals out in the community, amongst many others.

As part of transition into adulthood we develop independent travel skills, personal hygiene awareness, money and cooking skills.  We also focus on developing self-confidence and self-esteem.  Our ethos encourages respect for each other and our environment and promotes socialisation skills within the group.

How can I access this service?

You can access this service by using your personal budget (direct payment or any other form), direct funding through your local authority or private funds.

Please take a look at the planner on this website to see what activities we have arranged for the rest of this year.

A youth club for young adults

L8’s (12 - 25 yrs)

L8s is a social youth club for 12–25 year olds with any level of learning disability.

It takes place every Friday 5-9pm, at Harpenden House, with a range of leisure activities such as pool, table tennis, music, TV and space to chat available, as well as a tuck shop!

Anyone 12-25 with any diagnosed learning disability (Autism, ADHD, Global Developmental Delay, Down’s syndrome etc.). At the moment, we can’t support members who would need 1:1 support.

To join L8s, email us directly with an enquiry and we can sort out for you to become a member. Once a member of the group, you can come along as many Fridays as you like, you’ll just pay £10 on the door each time you come.

If you are interested in joining please email Simon on simonthompson@n-mencap.org

Sitting and Befriending.

We offer a sitting and befriending service to Nottingham City and County for clients with a range of learning disabilities. We support both adults and children over the age of 5 years old.  Support is available either in the client’s home or out and about in the community. This could include, for example, trips to the cinema, walks in a park, swimming, trips to the shops etc.  Our aim is to offer the client the opportunity to access activities and social experiences to build their life skills, self-confidence and self-esteem.  We help to develop basic life skills in the home and community, including independent travel training and making healthy lifestyle choices.

This service also gives the parents, carers and their families some respite time and an additional source of support.

If you have a dependent turning 18 within the next couple of years we can offer you support through transition from child services to adult services and signpost you to the appropriate agencies.

Lifestyle Choices

Each day in the week is an opportunity to learn, make friends, express yourself, and get active here at Nottingham Mencap.

We are open from 09:30 - 15:00 Monday to Friday for adults living in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. We can provide 1-2-1 support if needed too depending on need.

We are proud of what we do here and have trained learning disability tutors delivering sessions which are varied, educational, and fun. Not only that, we try and push boundaries to allow the people we support to reach their potential.

Activities range from arts and crafts, story telling, drama, independent life skills such as cooking, IT training, history and training (online safety, how to report hate crime etc). We have also recently started a swim and gym session in the community and sports activities too.
